What Kinds of Meal Plans are There?

Meal plans are split into two camps.

1. Pre-prepared meals

2. Ingredients and recipes

While they both have the same goal - making it easier to enjoy healthy and delicious food - there are a lot of differences between them, too.

The pre-prepared meals take all the hard work off the customers’ hands, delivering ready to heat and eat meals to their door. The recipe plans do the planning and shopping for you, and often some of the prep work. The cooking? That’s up to you at home.

One area to look out for is who created the recipes and cooked the meals. This can vary from nutritionists and dieticians, to chefs, doctors and even celebrities!

What are the Pros and Cons of Pre-Prepared Meals?

This option is great for a totally managed solution. The food is prepared at the company kitchens, and either sent out fresh or flash-frozen to retain nutrition. Customers know that they are eating healthy portion sizes, and that the food has been prepared accurately. This option also works well if you are looking to send meals to a loved one. Some meal plan companies have options specifically for seniors, helping them live independently for longer, or for those in temporary need, such as new moms after they’ve had a baby.

Pre-prepared meals are not for everyone, however. If customers are looking for a specific dietary requirement, be careful before signing up to a managed meal plan like this. While some do offer speciality diets such as gluten free, vegetarian or low carb, not all do. Always check the recipe and menu section to see how much choice you will have.

Pre-prepared meals are also not ideal for users who have a severe allergy, intolerance or dislike for a commonly used ingredient.

How Do the Recipe Meal Plans Work?

On the other side of the meal plan market, are the companies who send fresh and seasonal ingredients alongside recipes. Customers still get the benefit of not having to think about planning healthy meals, shopping for ingredients, and in many cases even preparing fruits and vegetables and other food items. The cooking element is all done in your own kitchen, though. This means it’s easy to skip an ingredient you have an allergy to, or don’t enjoy. It also means that customers are learning new recipes and techniques at the same time as enjoying nutritious and delicious recipes. You can choose meal plans which cover everything, from main courses to smoothies.

These recipe and ingredient delivery services are not ideal for customers who cannot cook by themselves, such as the elderly, or those who want the simplicity and speed of ‘heat and eat’ options.

What Else Should I Look Out for When Choosing Meal Plans?

Some other important elements to consider when choosing meal plans, are:

 • Price. Prices can really vary depending on what you’re looking for. Managed plans start from around $120 per week, while a la carte menu choices can be as little as $6 per meal. Recipe and ingredient delivery services can be very competitive, with servings starting at around $15.

 • Nutrition. Some meal plans are intended for weight loss, others for encouraging balanced diets, and some simply for ease of use. All meals should come with nutritional information so that customers know what they are eating and preparing ahead of time.

 • Environmental Impact. With all these deliveries, what’s happening to the packaging and materials? Most meal delivery plans have smart recycling options, and an awareness of their impact on the environment.

 • Shipping. Shipping is usually across the entire USA, but enter your zip code early on so that you aren’t disappointed. It’s also savvy to make sure that shipping and delivery doesn’t cost extra so that you aren’t surprised by hidden costs at checkout.
